Cameron S. was giving it his all and trying to make it through the long school days when he was enrolled in a traditional school, but health issues made it very difficult. These health issues would affect his school day and his teachers were not very understanding. Cameron continued to tell his story and noted, “I love this online school! You are able to make your own schedule and I am able to do my classes whenever, as long as I get my stuff done. I am able to do as I please and check in on Wednesdays – this is the best kind of schooling there is. I wouldn’t change the transfer if I had a chance because I’m in love with all the opportunities I get for being online schooled. I don’t have to worry about other kids in my school and whether I am accepted or not because I am able to do online school at home. I learn a lot better online than I did in regular school.”

Gabriella D. moved to a new city and had to switch schools at the tail-end of her sophomore year in high school. Like most of us, Gabriella found change to be difficult. She began having anxiety attacks and wanted nothing to do with school. The thought of attending a virtual school crossed her mind over the summer so she enrolled but didn’t take it seriously or put much effort into her schooling.
Shortly after realizing she wasn’t taking online learning seriously, her mom sent her back to her previous high school. Gabriella was unhappy and had already made up her mind that she didn’t want to attend. Gabriella recalled, “I was skipping school all the time. In the time I was there, I skipped every day. She went on to say, “My senior year came around and I was told I was technically a junior again, and that’s when I thought to myself, ‘What am I doing?’ Around October or November of 2017, I started to work on school and by January 2018, I had already completed 8 classes. It is now April and I now have 15 classes completed and I will now be a graduate of 2018 as I should be.”

When Marcus C. decided to join My Virtual Academy, he was largely looking to try something new. No one he knew had tried virtual learning before, so he was in uncharted waters. Armed with a positive attitude and an eagerness for change, he found the transition to online learning a breeze. Teen pregnancy is something that throws a curve ball to a lot of teens during their high school years. Sometimes it’s hard to see the path that they should take to obtain their high school diploma while juggling being a mother, but the important thing to note is that there is indeed a path! Tykela W. was really struggling in school prior to coming to My Virtual Academy. After leaving a traditional school, she enrolled with a virtual school. Tykela said, “I got too many assignments at once and there was no help if I didn’t understand something.” As you can imagine, that’s no recipe for success. In fact, it was a sure fire way of setting her up for failure.
When Tykela decided it was time to try another virtual school, she decided on My Virtual Academy. She said, “Before I came to MVA, I was missing 14 credits. I knew if I wanted to graduate on time, then I had to make something work. MVA helped a lot. You don’t have to rush to complete your classes. I can pace myself and if I can’t understand something, I actually have someone to help me. If my teacher can’t help me, then he gets me a tutor.”

When we spoke with Tykela, she was asked what she liked most about being a student at MVA and she reiterated her love for having someone available that could walk her through areas she was struggling in. She said, “My favorite thing about My Virtual Academy is that I don’t have to rush to complete my classes and if I need help, my teacher is always one phone call away to help me.”
Tykela said that if she were to talk to a student who was struggling like she was prior to MVA, she would say, “It’s a good thing (making the switch to virtual school). If you need time, they give you time. It really helps you a lot.”
As for life after graduation, Tykela has her sights set on attending a community college to further her education.

Mikayla A. tried her hardest to attend her traditional high school but when illness got in the way, absences took a real toll on her academic performance. Before she knew it, she was behind in credits and was struggling to keep up. That’s where My Virtual Academy came in…
She stated, “MVA has brought me in the right direction of success because it gave me an opportunity public schools couldn’t. “My favorite thing about MVA is being able to work on my school at my own pace and whether I am sitting in a classroom all day, my hard work still pays off without losing it over absences. I don’t have to sit through a lecture on things I already know, and if I’m having trouble understanding a topic, I have a mentor to guide me through it. I also have the opportunity to go back and fix my grades until they are up to my standard.”
