“Health issues made traditional school very difficult.”

“Health issues made traditional school very difficult.”

Cameron S. was giving it his all and trying to make it through the long school days when he was enrolled in a traditional school, but health issues made it very difficult. These health issues would affect his school day and his teachers were not very understanding. Being a teen with health problems is hard enough, but to be in a learning environment where you are getting in trouble for tending to your needs or missing class time because of an illness adds a lot of stress and can make you feel like you are backed into a corner.

When you take a health issue and accompany that with anxiety, making it through the school day becomes a serious struggle. Cameron found answers to his academic struggles through My Virtual Academy. He stated, “My Virtual Academy gives me as much flexibility as I need. The transition to MVA was very easy and I wouldn’t hesitate to make the switch.”

We asked Cameron what his favorite thing is about My Virtual Academy and he said, “That you can go at your own pace. I can work ahead if I know I go on vacation or want to take a break for Christmas and other holidays. It’s great to be able to choose when I want to work, like if I go to my grandparents to help with yard work during the day, I can do my work at night.” He went on to say, “So, it’s not like there is a set time things have to be done. I can just go at the pace that I like to go at.”

When speaking with Cameron, we asked if he could give struggling students who are looking at switching to a virtual school some advice. He replied, “This is your best option. As long as you stay on track, you’re good.  Virtual learning is flexible and easy and I think you’ll like it.”

Cameron continued to tell his story and noted, “I love this online school! You are able to make your own schedule and I am able to do my classes whenever, as long as I get my stuff done. I am able to do as I please and check in on Wednesdays – this is the best kind of schooling there is. I wouldn’t change the transfer if I had a chance because I’m in love with all the opportunities I get for being online schooled. I don’t have to worry about other kids in my school and whether I am accepted or not because I am able to do online school at home. I learn a lot better online than I did in regular school.”

We are very happy that Cameron decided to make the change and take control of his education. We hear stories like his every day. Sometimes students just simply need another approach to learning and to work in another environment. If this sounds like you or someone you know, reach out to us. Our staff can answer any questions you may have about our free virtual academy and can discuss the enrollment process. “I wanted to give up.”

“I wanted to give up.”

Gabriella D. moved to a new city and had to switch schools at the tail-end of her sophomore year in high school. Like most of us, Gabriella found change to be difficult. She began having anxiety attacks and wanted nothing to do with school. The thought of attending a virtual school crossed her mind over the summer so she enrolled but didn’t take it seriously or put much effort into her schooling.

Shortly after realizing she wasn’t taking online learning seriously, her mom sent her back to her previous high school. Gabriella was unhappy and had already made up her mind that she didn’t want to attend. Gabriella recalled, “I was skipping school all the time. In the time I was there, I skipped every day. I wanted to drop out. I wanted to give up. I brought up the idea of giving virtual school another try and said I wouldn’t drop out if I could take school online.”

She went on to say, “My senior year came around and I was told I was technically a junior again, and that’s when I thought to myself, ‘What am I doing?’ Around October or November of 2017, I started to work on school and by January 2018, I had already completed 8 classes. It is now April and I now have 15 classes completed and I will now be a graduate of 2018 as I should be.”

That’s the beauty of virtual learning. When you attend My Virtual Academy, you can work at your own pace – as slow or fast as you want. That flexibility allows students like Gabriella to recover credits and work at a more rapid pace so that they stay on track with their original date of graduation. The pride shown on student’s faces as they graduate on time or ahead of time is priceless.

Gabriella proudly says, “No words will ever describe how proud of myself I am and how good it feels to say I worked really hard for this! And, of course, with the help of my amazing teacher, Mrs. Premcevic! I honestly didn’t think I’d graduate and then I thought I would graduate next year but now I’m graduating Gabriellathis year. I’m so proud of myself!”

Gabriella is still contemplating what she wants to do after graduation, but as of now, she has her sights set on attending cosmetology school. One thing is certain, whatever she sets her mind to, she will achieve! We are so proud of you, Gabriella!

“I love the flexible scheduling.”

“I love the flexible scheduling.”

When Marcus C. decided to join My Virtual Academy, he was largely looking to try something new. No one he knew had tried virtual learning before, so he was in uncharted waters. Armed with a positive attitude and an eagerness for change, he found the transition to online learning a breeze. Marcus wasn’t scared, nervous, or anxious about switching schools and was very excited to enjoy the benefits of the flexible scheduling that virtual learning offers.

We spoke with Marcus and asked him what he loved most about attending a school that has a flexible schedule and he said, “Having a flexible schedule allows me to make my own schedule and manage my own time so in case I’m sick or have errands to run, this flexibility works great!” He continued to say, “If I need to look for a job in the future, this type of schooling will give me flexibility and a school/work balance.”

Marcus mentioned he liked that, “My Virtual Academy paved a way for me to go to a community college or trade school.” If he could give some words of advice for teens who are contemplating switching from a traditional school to My Virtual Academy, he would say, “Stay positive. Work hard. MVA is a good path to take to earn your diploma.”

While Marcus just wanted to try something new, the level of flexibility My Virtual Academy offers can be a true life saver for some students. If your teen is facing adversities in school, whether it be bullying, health problems, teen pregnancy, or for any other reason, we would love to talk to you and show you that there is a way your teen can be successful at school and earn their high school diploma. Continue on to read about Titiyana, a teen mom, who would not be able to complete high school without the flexible scheduling My Virtual Academy offers.

Teen pregnancy is something that throws a curve ball to a lot of teens during their high school years. Sometimes it’s hard to see the path that they should take to obtain their high school diploma while juggling being a mother, but the important thing to note is that there is indeed a path! So many teen moms feel that they have no choice but to set aside their hopes and dreams because of choices they made, but that’s simply not the case.

While it may be difficult to attend a traditional school, students like Titiyana N. found virtual learning was an excellent option for them. Titiyana learned she was pregnant during her junior year of high school. Eager to earn her high school diploma, she knew returning to her traditional school wasn’t going to be a good option for her so she decided to try enrolling in My Virtual Academy.

Titiyana raved about switching to My Virtual Academy. When we spoke, she said, “It was exciting! It’s much better than going to a regular school. I get a lot more done and it’s flexible. I love being able to work at my own pace. I can tend to my son and do my schooling after.”

She mentioned that when she first started taking classes at My Virtual Academy, she had to set up a schedule so she could keep track of everything and stay on course. Like a true mom, Titiyana found that this way of schooling made multitasking easier and she would recommend it to other teen moms.

Are you in a situation similar to Titiyana’s or just want to try something new like Marcus? Please always remember that there are options out there! You don’t need to exclusively do one or the other. Schooling and motherhood can coexist when you are at the right school. We pride ourselves in offering tailored, flexible, individualized coursework that allows you to fit in all the different roles in your life simultaneously. “Thank you MVA for helping me graduate early.”

“Thank you MVA for helping me graduate early.”

Tykela W. was really struggling in school prior to coming to My Virtual Academy. After leaving a traditional school, she enrolled with a virtual school. Tykela said, “I got too many assignments at once and there was no help if I didn’t understand something.” As you can imagine, that’s no recipe for success. In fact, it was a sure fire way of setting her up for failure.

When Tykela decided it was time to try another virtual school, she decided on My Virtual Academy. She said, “Before I came to MVA, I was missing 14 credits. I knew if I wanted to graduate on time, then I had to make something work. MVA helped a lot. You don’t have to rush to complete your classes. I can pace myself and if I can’t understand something, I actually have someone to help me. If my teacher can’t help me, then he gets me a tutor.”

At My Virtual Academy, we pride ourselves on working with each student to ensure their success. Like Tykela kindly mentioned, if a student is struggling to understand the material, there are resources at their disposal. Teachers are always available as are tutors and mentors.

Tykela had a goal of finishing her high school classes on time, but she actually went above and beyond her goal. She went on to say, “I have finished all of my classes early. I took 3 classes and if I would finish them early, I would get a class added. I had an awesome teacher by my side 24/7 and life coach. It’s awesome. I really want to thank MVA for helping me graduate early.”

When we spoke with Tykela, she was asked what she liked most about being a student at MVA and she reiterated her love for having someone available that could walk her through areas she was struggling in. She said, “My favorite thing about My Virtual Academy is that I don’t have to rush to complete my classes and if I need help, my teacher is always one phone call away to help me.”Tykela W

Tykela said that if she were to talk to a student who was struggling like she was prior to MVA, she would say, “It’s a good thing (making the switch to virtual school). If you need time, they give you time. It really helps you a lot.”

As for life after graduation, Tykela has her sights set on attending a community college to further her education.

We are so proud of our MVA students, like Tykela W. Students work hard and their efforts pay off in a big way! If you have a student who would benefit from being a virtual student, please visit our website to learn more or reach out to us at 800-297-2119 and our staff would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. We hope to hear from you soon!

“MVA gave me the opportunity that traditional school couldn’t.”

“MVA gave me the opportunity that traditional school couldn’t.”

Mikayla A. tried her hardest to attend her traditional high school but when illness got in the way, absences took a real toll on her academic performance. Before she knew it, she was behind in credits and was struggling to keep up. That’s where My Virtual Academy came in…

She stated, “MVA has brought me in the right direction of success because it gave me an opportunity public schools couldn’t. Absences weren’t able to effect the hard work I put into my grades.” There are a lot of students who encounter illnesses with themselves or a family member. It makes it hard to attend regular classes that have set times/days of the week. Virtual school can be a lifesaver for students who face this scenario.

When a student learns virtually, they are working on a customized program, from the comfort of their own home (or anywhere else with internet access). They have the flexibility to complete their assignments on their own time. If they need to work ahead because they have upcoming appointments or surgeries, they can do so. If they need extra time to complete their coursework due to unexpected life events, they can have that too, without the worry they will be in trouble or are falling behind.

Mikayla Azbell Graduation PhotoMikayla went on to say, “I was able to finish my classes at my own pace, and have the opportunity to get grades which were up to my standard by retaking quizzes and having help from a mentor.” Having pride in the grades they receive and their studies boosts teen’s confidence and gives them the extra drive to push harder and excel. Mikayla is a prime example of that.

“My favorite thing about MVA is being able to work on my school at my own pace and whether I am sitting in a classroom all day, my hard work still pays off without losing it over absences. I don’t have to sit through a lecture on things I already know, and if I’m having trouble understanding a topic, I have a mentor to guide me through it. I also have the opportunity to go back and fix my grades until they are up to my standard.”

Mikayla is a prime example of a great student success story when someone completes their schooling with My Virtual Academy. We aim to help students get closer to graduation every day. It’s our goal and we take great strides to meet it.
